本种形体极近上一种树形针毛蕨Macrothelypteris aurita（Bedd.）Ching,但形体大而粗壮如桫锣，根状茎短而横卧，粗约20厘米，叶柄长1.5厘米，遍生鳞片，鳞片线形，具毛；叶轴上的鳞片稀疏，或有时近光滑，羽轴上的鳞片边缘具较密的缘毛；囊群盖宿存。
产台湾（高雄、台中）。生林缘，海拔约700米。分布于泰国、菲律宾、新西兰、巴布亚新几内亚、澳大利亚以及太平洋诸岛屿。模式标本采自新西兰（南岛）。
